Sudoku is also known as Suduko, Soduku or Sodoku and, despite its name, is not originally from Asia. At the end of the 19th century, French newspapers first published magic squares with 9×9 cells and missing numbers. In a magic square, the sum of the numbers in all columns, rows and diagonals is equal. However, these were not quite Sudoku puzzles, as they also contained two-digit numbers, for example, and at the beginning of the First World War, these newspaper puzzles disappeared from the scene. It was not until 1979 that the Sudoku game principle designed by American puzzle engineer Howard Garns was published as Number Place in New York puzzle magazines. It is unclear to what extent he was inspired by the French dailies. In 1984, the game found its way to Japan, where it was called Sudoku.
